An introduction to painless, stress-free, and safe tooth extraction
Tooth extractions may seem a curious service for Silsby Family Dental to promote. We want to avoid extractions, right? Of course, that is our priority. But there may also be circumstances beyond your control and situations where the removal of teeth is necessary to restore your comfort, health, and function and prevent further pain and health complications. Plus, we feel our valued patients in the Albion, New York area should know they can benefit from surgical and advanced services courtesy of a team they already know well and trust. This provides considerable peace of mind when unpleasant surprises arise.
When would I need to get rid of a tooth?
As noted, extractions are often a “procedure of last resort.” However, removing teeth may be the only way to get relief from a persistent and intense toothache and restore normal function that supports health. In doing so, you are able to eat foods again, even crunchy or sticky items. This helps to support your overall health as you do not suffer from nutritional deficiencies. It’s also an appropriate treatment for when some badly decayed or severely damaged teeth are not well-suited to nonsurgical root canal therapy. Likewise, if your tooth doesn’t properly heal after the root canals are treated or other endodontic procedures are performed (such as surgery with an apicoectomy), removing it may be your only and final option.
How does it feel?
You shouldn’t feel anything. We use local anesthetic to numb the affected tooth and gentle techniques to ensure utmost comfort. Also, most tooth extractions are very straightforward. If teeth are mostly intact and visible above the gums, Dr. Evan Silsby may use special dental instruments and techniques to loosen and lift the tooth from its socket. This approach is known as a “simple extraction.”
So, not all extractions involve surgery?
That’s right. Simple extractions are very common. Now, you may need to have a surgical extraction if the damaged tooth is broken or impacted (trapped underneath the gums). Basically, any time the damaged tooth is hard to access, Dr. Silsby will employ surgical techniques to remove it. Make no mistake, though, this type of extraction is equally comfortable to its simple counterpart due to our skill and onsite capabilities at Silsby Family Dental.
Our team in Albion, NY, will also review instructions for pre- and post-care with you to ensure the extraction site heals properly. We’ll also want to explore tooth replacement options right away because tooth loss hastens destructive bone loss. We have some of the best, modern ways to replace teeth, including implants to retain a single replacement tooth (crown) or an entire upper and/or lower denture(s).
