Get to know replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural ones! FAQs about dental implants

Tooth loss and gaps in your smile should not be a “normal” part of the aging process. You need to maintain all of the teeth in your smile to support your systemic health, healthy function, and a sustained, good quality of life. Silsby Family Dental has helped generations of families from across the Albion, New York, area keep or restore their complete, functional smiles with modern tooth replacement—implants!

What are implants?

Any time external devices or components are incorporated into the body to treat deterioration or degeneration of tissues, these new parts are referred to as “implants.” In dentistry, the implant refers to a cylindrical-shaped component of artificial teeth. They are designed to replace tooth roots. Earlier-generation bridges and dentures do not replace the tooth root. Instead, these forms of tooth replacement depend on neighboring teeth, natural suction in the mouth, or products like dental adhesives to hold the bridge or denture in place in the jaw. Since implant-supported prostheses account for the roots of the teeth, patients can expect ultimate stability, comfort, and lasting satisfaction with their new crowns, bridges, and dentures.

How are implants applied to the jaw?

Before implants can function like tooth roots, they must be precisely inserted in the jawbone. This occurs as part of a surprisingly straightforward surgical procedure. After the implant is precisely positioned in the bone, it will naturally and safely join the rest of the jaw in the coming few months. This process is called “osseointegration.”

Generally, an attachment or “abutment” piece is added to connect the prosthetic to the implant. Once the abutments and restoration have been added, your new connected tooth will not go anywhere! Patients have peace of mind that their dentures won’t slip around.

How many implants are needed?

Well, that depends on your needs. If you are missing just one tooth, a single implant may be applied and secured to support and replace it, or a minimal number of implants (four to six) may be applied to anchor an entire upper or lower denture. Bridges, too, may be held in place with a few implants.

What are the biggest benefits of implant-supported teeth?

Many of the benefits stem from the fact that these prosthetic teeth provide unparalleled stability. They are also popular due to:

  • A natural appearance – Since implants are designed like natural teeth, they also do a great job of restoring an attractive, tooth-like appearance – no fake or plastic-looking “false teeth” here!
  • Unsurpassed strength and durability – Implants are not going anywhere! Since they are “rooted” in the jawbone, they promote patient satisfaction and can last a lifetime with the “usual” good oral care.
  • Promoting bone health – Implants not only address tooth loss, but they also prevent or stop bone loss in the jaw. When bone loss is avoided, the shape of your face and overall appearance is retained. You are also able to continue to chew, speak, and otherwise use your teeth naturally and without difficulty.
