Why might I need a dental crown?
Dental crowns are one of several common restorative treatments our team uses to repair the smile. Crowns are also sometimes referred to as “caps” as they cover the structure of a natural tooth. They are commonly fabricated from porcelain, a material that closely mimics the specific appearance of natural teeth.
There are a variety of reasons why someone may need a dental crown, including when:
- A tooth has been significantly damaged or even weakened due to decay
- A tooth has undergone recent or past root canal therapy and needs additional support
- A tooth is cracked or fractured
- A tooth is misshapen or discolored and requires cosmetic improvement
- Restoring a single dental implant
Regardless of why you need a dental crown, our team at Silsby Family Dental is dedicated to working with you to develop the most suitable treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
What is CEREC technology?
CEREC is an acronym that stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Its specialized system allows our dental team to design, create, and place dental crowns in just one appointment. This technology uses 3D imaging and computer-aided design (CAD) to create a customized crown that fits perfectly over your damaged tooth.
How does the CEREC process work?
The process of obtaining a CEREC crown involves three simple steps:
- Preparation. The first step is preparing the damaged tooth for the crown. Dr. Evan Silsby removes any decay or damage and shapes the tooth to make room for the crown.
- Scanning. Next, a digital scan of your teeth will be taken using a special camera. This scan uses a computer to create a 3D image of your prepared tooth, which is then used to design your customized dental crown.
- Fabrication and placement. Using the 3D image, Dr. Silsby will use CAD technology to design your crown. The design is then sent to a special milling machine that creates the crown out of a block of porcelain. Once the crown is ready, it will be placed on your tooth and bonded right into place.
